Before you hire a maid, it is important that you interview them. Even if the person comes highly recommended, there is no harm in double checking.
Here are a few tips to help you manage the interview session:
1. Don’t Be In A Hurry
You may get tempted to hire the first applicant that meets your criteria. We recommend interviewing multiple applicants because it allows you check mate whatever drew you to a particular prospect. For instance, while someone may show promise of dedication to work, by interviewing someone else, you might discover an aspect of them you didn’t notice e.g. their character/reactions. Don’t be afraid to schedule more than one interview session with a prospect you like. You can include a trial period to see how the arrangement works out before sealing the deal. Be patient and don’t be in a hurry to hire.
2. Cross Check Every Information
Don’t take an agent or prospective employee’s word for it. Trust your instincts. Interview the prospective house help in person to see if there are any discrepancies between what they told the agency and what they are telling you. Contact the person’s previous employers, if you have access to that information, and make your own enquiries. Don’t be sentimental. Check with the police to be sure the person doesn’t have any ties to a criminal case. Test their character. Take your children with you for the interview and watch how both the prospective employee and the kids react to each other. Ask for medical records or arrange medical tests in a hospital you know and trust. If they have allergies or recurrent medical issues, research it and find out how it affects their work with you.
3. Ask Introspective Questions
People’s philosophies or belief systems forms the basis of their actions. Asking detailed questions about their background can give you an idea of how they think or what forms their paradigm. Visit their families to know where his/her roots are and discuss with them too. Find out what the expectations of the job and their life are. That way you can tell if they are in it for the money or for something else more meaningful in the long haul. e.g. when hiring a maid for cleaning, find out if they are passionate about seeing things orderly. Those with passion will often do a good job even when you are not watching.
